XVI International St. James Festival Concert “Te Deum”

On September 19, the St. James Festival presents the concert ,,Te Deum”, bringing together composers from the Nordic and Baltic countries representing three different generations. The programme explores diverse aesthetic approaches to choral music, ranging from the heritage of 20th-century Lithuanian music to contemporary Norwegian and Estonian compositions.

Concert programme:

  • Teisutis Makačinas. ,,Saulės poema” (The Poem of the Sun)
    Text by M. Martinaitis

Created in 1975 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis’s birth, this work was inspired by the painter’s poetic and multi-layered visual world. The composition reflects the spirit of Čiurlionis through its transparent harmonic language, polyphonic development, and sensitive echoes of traditional laments.

  • Ola Gjeilo. Dark Night of the Soul

Inspired by the poetry of the Spanish mystic St. John of the Cross, this work for choir, piano and strings tells the story of an inner spiritual journey through uncertainty towards enlightenment.

  • Arvo Pärt. ,,Te Deum”

One of the most distinctive works of contemporary sacred music, characterised by a sense of spaciousness, a strict structural approach, and Pärt’s unmistakable tintinnabuli sound.
