OPENING CONCERT OF THE INTERNATIONAL FOLKLORE FESTIVAL “POKROVO VARPAI” – “FOLKLORE AND THE PRESENT”

For more than two decades, the “Pokrovo varpai” festival has been creating a unique space for dialogue between traditional and contemporary music, where folklore takes on a new sound and opens itself to modern audiences.

The centerpiece of this year’s opening concert is the world premiere of Leon Somov’s “Echo of the Past”, where ethnic vocals, live voice recordings, field sounds and electronic music merge into a contemporary sonic narrative. This is not a reconstruction of tradition, but its revival – listening beyond the boundaries of time.

An exceptional ensemble of performers will take the stage: Leon Somov, a string quartet, folk violinist Serhii Okhrimchuk, Julija Lankė, percussionists Džiugas Daugirda and Andrius Žibikas, folklore ensembles ARINUŠKA and RERO, and ethnic vocal performers from Lithuania, Georgia, Ukraine and Poland.

The second part of the concert, “Living Tradition”, will take the audience on a musical journey through the diversity of the world’s traditional cultures. The finest folklore ensembles from Lithuania and abroad will perform, representing Armenia, Bulgaria, Latvia, Poland, Spain, Norway, Georgia and Ukraine.
