“Summer Wasps Bite Us Even in November” is a story about two men and one woman who, not knowing what to do with their lives or how to cope with absolute loneliness and meaninglessness, embark on a bold and tragicomic journey through a world of tangled relationships. They try to find a way out of a situation in which ordinary forms of communication no longer work.

In an attempt to free themselves from loneliness and self-deception, the characters try to escape the traps of time, fleeing both existence and themselves. Their search for truth gains momentum, eventually leading to absurdity. And all that remains is the rain – rain that has been falling for three days already. All that remains are the summer wasps – the sacred bees of summer that sting us even in November. It is both fascinating and deeply moving. As in all of I. Vyrypayeva’s plays, it is very funny, a little sad, a little cruel and, ultimately, a little about the meaning of life.

Critics describe I. Vyrypayeva’s dramaturgy as being somewhere between the work of American director Quentin Tarantino, known for the cult film “Pulp Fiction”, and Russian cinema classic Andrei Tarkovsky, director of “Solaris”.

“Summer Wasps Bite Us Even in November” is my favourite play. Probably because there is a mystery within the very structure of the text. For example, there is one important detail that the audience will never learn about during the performance, yet they may be able to feel it. I do not know how this play will be staged, what key the director will use to unlock it and what will ultimately be presented to the audience. I am certain that there will be love and light in the performance.

Nevertheless, “Summer Wasps…” is a very complex play to stage, so directors face a challenging task. Of course, this is partly the author’s fault, and perhaps the form is simply too complex, but I hope that everyone will find it amusing, sad and meaningful,” says the play’s author I. Vyrypayev.
