What happens when everything we are used to becomes uncontrollable, absurd and, eventually, disappears? Accustomed to watching, we suddenly find ourselves being watched. Accustomed to following instructions, we suddenly no longer understand their language. Accustomed to an answering machine, we suddenly have to answer ourselves. Those who operate in secret become visible to a thousand eyes. Holding their lives in their hands, they realise they are actually holding a sausage.
And eventually, we too become a sausage, casually tossed onto someone’s table.
SAUCISSON, a contemporary circus performance by Elena Kosovec and Izabelė Kuzelytė, embodies the absurdity of everyday life through a playful celebration and deconstruction of circus techniques, while exploring the tension between beauty and disgust. The performance relentlessly deconstructs stereotypes surrounding the body, creating a world where objects considered sacred lose their socially assigned symbolic meanings, pleasure intertwines with fear, and the verticality of a rope twists into a knot in the audience’s stomach.
Combining theatre, aerial acrobatics, dance and operatic singing, SAUCISSON – a French title meaning “sausage” – was born from the creators’ experiences of everyday absurdity and their reflections on the paradoxes of daily life. In 2024, SAUCISSON became a laureate of the CircusNext platform.
