BALTIC BALKAN (LT)
Historically, Lithuania’s capital, Vilnius, has been a great melting pot where the influences of Baltic, Belarusian, Ukrainian, Polish, Russian, Jewish, German, Tatar, Karaim, British and Roma cultures have simmered together over the centuries.
In the courtyards where the son of a poor klezmer musician was born – the legendary violinist Jascha Heifetz – and fresh secular music flowed in from the East, the Baltic Balkan project was launched. Its aim is to blend contemporary dance music rhythms with the diverse musical heritage of this region.
This musical and performance project draws inspiration from Yugoslav punk rock, the performances of numerous fascinating bands seen at European festivals, and films that capture the true spirit of the Balkans – and the Baltics, too.
