The listening session, which will take place on All Saints’ Day, is dedicated, of course, to sacred music—wonderful works that invite us to pause, reflect, and listen to music born of faith and spiritual contemplation.
The music featured in the first part of the listening session is grounded in the purity of the voice, breath, and silence—ranging from the monophonic chants of the nun and philosopher Hildegard von Bingen and the ritual shōmyō chanting of Japanese Buddhists to the Baroque lament by J. C. Bach.
The second part explores the relationship of later eras to spiritual texts: here, the dramatic episode from G. Verdi’s Requiem is juxtaposed with the serene mood of G. Fauré’s and F. Poulenc’s prayers, as well as the luminous contemporary choral harmonies of Ē. Ešenvalds and K. A. Arnesen.
The entire program is united by a single theme—the human aspiration to express compassion, hope, and contemplation through music.
Important: During this event, the music is played through top-of-the-line equipment, from records, in an intimate space specially designed for attentive listening.
