“PAS MUS ŠVENTĖ” PERFORMANCE (dir. Paulius Markevičius)

A gently comic and recognisable story about a very serious attempt to finally reach an agreement

Let us travel to a small town where its residents – neighbours, colleagues, parents from the local school, and relatives who only see each other at weddings and funerals – are preparing for an important community celebration. The plan is simple: reach an agreement, prepare everything and celebrate together. What could possibly go wrong?

The preparations quickly turn into an absurd chain of conflicts, while the anticipation of a shared celebration is overshadowed by differences in values and battles of egos. Someone has to organise everything; someone always knows better. Someone promised to take care of something and still hasn’t done it. Someone hasn’t spoken to someone else since last year, but this year they will still have to sit at the same table.

The seemingly harmonious and orderly facade of the community, already showing cracks, reveals the paradoxes of community life. What is the state of modern society when, even in small communities, different identities can become a reason for a lack of communication?

Through elements of Scandinavian deadpan comedy, the performance invites us to explore serious questions that arise in every community: how can we be together when we are so different, and how can we create a sense of “us” without losing ourselves? Brought together by place and time, the townspeople waiting for the celebration as if it were an ideal future hold up a mirror to ourselves.
