Commemorating the Baltic Way

On August 23 at 12:00 PM, residents and visitors of Vilnius are invited to gather at the chapel pillar dedicated to the Baltic Way, next to the Šeškinė Polyclinic, and commemorate one of the most important symbols of Lithuania’s freedom and unity.

It was here, in Šeškinė, that on August 23, 1989, the human chain of the Baltic Way stretched along Ukmergės Street. Today, the historic site is marked by a wooden chapel pillar commemorating the unity of the three Baltic nations and their shared pursuit of freedom.

This year, the surroundings of the chapel pillar have also been renovated. New paths and steps have been installed, the area around the monument has been improved, and shrubs and perennial plants have been planted, creating a more welcoming space for community gatherings and commemorations.

During the event, the Šeškinė community ensemble will perform, while visitors will also be invited to take part in kite-making workshops and bracelet-making activities – symbolically reflecting togetherness, freedom and the connections that unite us.

Join us on August 23 to remember the history of the Baltic Way and the powerful sense of unity that brought Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia together in 1989.
