Murray Schisgal The Typists

A woman and a man, meeting every day at the same workplace. A traditional job, from eight in the morning to five in the evening, in a small office where the monotonous clatter of typewriters never ceases – endlessly typing out the names and addresses of potential customers on advertising postcards. This is how Sylvia Peyton and Paul Cunningham spend their days at the office. A woman and a man, desperately trying through everyday dialogues to speak about what excites them, saddens them, even hurts them. They blindly believe that they will never have to do something they don’t want to do, and that this daily “mechanical” typing of postcards is only a temporary job.

The Typists is a play about the longing to live differently, about the desire to break free, even briefly, from the shell of daily routine, and at the same time about the great fear of changing an already established life. It is a story about ambitions that are larger than the people themselves.
