On October 15 at 19:00, at the M. K. Čiurlionis House in Vilnius, we will launch a new season of the film evenings series together with director Audrius Stonys and watch the Italian director Franco Piavoli’s film Nostos: The Return (1989).
“What does it really mean to return home? Is it possible to return to a place that war and longing have already transformed into an image of memory?
Franco Piavoli’s film Nostos: The Return (1989) is a free, almost wordless vision of Homer’s Odyssey.
The director does not retell the myth – he attempts to approach a world in which the myth is only beginning to emerge. Here, the human voice merges with the sound of the sea, the wind, birds and the silence of the night.
Individual words, derived from ancient Mediterranean languages, become music, while nature becomes the film’s invisible deity.
In its structure, Nostos: The Return is closer to a symphony or a cinematic poem than to a screen adaptation of a literary plot.
It is a cinematic poem about a person searching not for a lost kingdom, but for a way back to themselves. About returning home – a home that may perhaps exist only in our memories,” says director Audrius Stonys.
After the screening, we invite you to stay for a discussion.
The event is free of charge and no advance registration is required.
Doors open: 18:30
