‘Less noise – more Light’ – Aglaja Ray’s solo exhibition

Less Noise – More Light presents more than sixteen months of interdisciplinary artistic research by Aglaja Ray (Eglė Tamulytė), exploring the relationship between people and their environment and focusing sustained attention on the observation of a particular place.

In 2025, the artist moved to Kazlų Rūda—not for a short-term residency, but to live there over an extended period. As a result, the research did not begin with a predetermined concept, but emerged through the observation and analysis of everyday life in a specific place: working at the municipality, interacting with local people, experiencing the forest, the military training grounds, and the slow rhythm of the town.

Today, Kazlų Rūda is one of Lithuania’s municipalities where a militarised environment and the imagery associated with it have become an ordinary part of everyday life. Surrounded by forests, the sounds of nature intertwine with gunfire, military vehicles, and training exercises.

And yet, this exhibition is not about war. It explores how, over time, people adapt to their surroundings, how their attention shifts, and how a place shapes not only individual experience but also relationships with others.

The paintings and assemblages presented in the exhibition bring together personal stories, experiences of the local community, and found objects. Some of the objects included in the exhibition were lent or donated by residents of Kazlų Rūda and became an integral part of the artistic research. In this way, the community is not merely an object of observation, but an active participant in the research itself.

The title Less Noise – More Light invites us to understand silence as more than the absence of sound. The exhibition speaks about attention—the ability to notice what often remains unseen amid the noise of everyday life. The forest, the militarised landscape, and interpersonal relationships become different layers of the same lived experience.

The exhibition invites viewers to stop searching for unequivocal answers and instead to slow down their gaze. Here, art functions as a method of inquiry—a way of understanding a place, a person, and the relationship between them.

Aglaja Ray (Eglė Tamulytė) is an interdisciplinary artist working across painting, installation, assemblage, and writing. She is a member of the Lithuanian Artists’ Association, a recipient of five individual grants from the Lithuanian Council for Culture, and a recipient of the Ary Stillman Award. Her work has been presented in more than seventy exhibitions in Lithuania and internationally and is held in private collections across Europe, the United States, and Mexico.
