Crossing Genre Boundaries | Listening to Records
About event

Classical, avant-garde, jazz, electronic music… These labels help us navigate the world of music, but sometimes they get in the way. When we hear the name of an unfamiliar genre, we often decide right away: “That’s not for me.” But behind it might lie music that would surprise us, move us, or simply appeal to us!

In this listening session, we invite you to briefly set aside genre boundaries and listen to music by artists who, at first glance, seem very different.

The first part of the evening will feature works by Edgar Varèse, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Pierre Boulez, and Terry Riley, as well as a recording by pianist Ieva Jokubavičiūtė. In the second part, we’ll move on to Brian Eno’s ambient music, as well as works by Hosano Yamamoto, David Friesen, Christer Bothén, and other artists, in which jazz, improvisation, and the traditions of various musical cultures play an important role.

As we listen, will we discover more differences or unexpected similarities? Perhaps music that initially seems foreign will turn out to be quite familiar.

At the Music Magic Club, a high-quality sound system allows you to hear even the subtlest details of the recordings, making your introduction to such diverse music an even more fascinating listening experience.

Important: During this event, the music is played through top-of-the-line equipment, from records, in an intimate space designed for attentive listening.
