On Wednesday, November 11, at 18:30, you are warmly invited to a screening of the latest documentary film by director Ramunė Rakauskaitė, “A Village Like This in America” (60 min., A Propos Studio, 2025), at the Antakalnis Eldership. The director will attend the event and will be happy to answer questions from the audience.
“A Village Like This in America” is an uplifting film about how Lithuanians who fled to America after World War II came up with the idea in the 1950s of establishing a summer camp for young people, where they could spend the summer communicating with one another in Lithuanian as much as possible.
Five years later, after several enthusiasts had raised the necessary funds, a farm was purchased in the state of Michigan, where construction and landscaping work began. The location was remarkably reminiscent of Lithuania. The Lithuanian-American camp “Dainava” became an inseparable part of life for many emigrants – their Lithuanian “village”, whose natural surroundings and landscape strongly resemble those of Lithuania.
Director R. Rakauskaitė has more than twenty years of experience as a filmmaker. She writes screenplays and is actively involved in the film industry, but is best known as a documentary filmmaker. One of the recurring themes in her work is the history of Lithuanians living abroad.
In 2026, the film was nominated for a Silver Crane Award in the Best Feature-Length Documentary category.
The event is organised by the Antakalnis Community Association and the public institution Meno Arena.
The events are supported by Vilnius City Municipality and the Antakalnis Eldership.
