The VU Wind Orchestra “Oktava” invites you to a unique concert where two different sides of the ensemble are revealed. The program is divided into two parts (without an intermission), leading the listener through contrasting musical worlds.
In the first part, three works will be performed:
Kazys Daugėla – “Lithuanian Dances,”
Kurt Gable – “Celtic Flutes,”
John Tatgenhorst – “Above and Beyond,”
which brought the orchestra top awards at a championship – the Grand Prix in Group D, as well as prizes for best conductor and soloists. This section features the colors, precision, and emotional depth of classical wind music.
The second part of the concert is dedicated to the late composer Gordon Goodwin. Here, six energetic compositions will be performed – Horn of Puente, Mueva los Huesos, Backrow Politics, Jazz Police, A Few Good Men, and Count Bubba – revealing a completely different, big band side of the orchestra.
This concert is a musical journey between two worlds, showing that “Oktava” communicates equally expressively in both classical and jazz languages.
THE CONCERT IS FREE OF CHARGE!
“Oktava” is one of the ensembles of the Vilnius University Culture Center, active since 1951 and uniting more than 60 members who are not afraid to take on challenges in performing music of various genres – from classical and jazz to rock. Most of the orchestra members are Vilnius University students – future doctors, physicists, educators, and representatives of other fields of study. The orchestra nurtures the tradition of wind music and is actively involved in concert activities in Lithuania and abroad. The ensemble is led by conductor Donatas Viaževičius, a long-time member of the orchestra and trumpeter.
The event is organized by the Vilnius University Culture Center. The VU Culture Center unites 16 artistic ensembles and creative studios and each year invites the city community to various cultural experiences.
