Loreta Narvilaitė | Time in Sound

Time can flow, stand still, or return in memories. It can even be heard in music. Composer Loreta Narvilaitė’s portrait evening invites listeners to experience precisely this: time embodied and reflected in sound.

Loreta Narvilaitė is among the most active and prominent Lithuanian composers of contemporary classical music today. The composer’s work often features motifs of the sea, the wind, the dunes and the city – symbols of her Western Lithuanian identity and her native city Klaipėda that become transformed into metaphors for inner states. Her music springs from a fecund combination of emotional openness, melodiousness and sensitivity to images inspired by nature. The neo-Romantic, minimalist sound of her works and their coherent dramatic structure draw the listener into a contemplative yet emotionally intense flow of sound.

Among the highlights of the portrait concert are the premieres of two new works. The composer’s latest composition – Look! The Snow is Falling; the Alpine Lake Sinks into Sleep; and Time Seems to Stop for piano duet – was composed especially for this occasion. It will be premiered by the internationally acclaimed piano duo of Vilija Poškutė and Tomas Daukantas (Lithuania / Switzerland) who regularly promote contemporary music by Lithuanian and Swiss composers on concert stages across Europe. Another duo of wonderful Lithuanian harpists – Joana Daunytė and Liucilė Vilimaitė – will perform the Lithuanian premiere of the new version of the Song of the Sea at Sunset, originally written for flute quartet a few years ago. The dialogue between these heavenly instruments will furthermore reveal the piece’s crystalline sound and subtle lyricism.

Musicologist Veronika Janatjeva will host the talk with the artist and performers, providing insights into the contexts of Narvilaitė’s work and the stories behind the creation of her new pieces.

„Time in Sound“ is an evening in which music will revive memories of the passing time, and the light of sunset will merge with the stillness of an Alpine lake. These are precious and enriching moments of being together, here and now. Your company is eagerly awaited!
