Once upon a time, there lived a Mr and Mrs Meyer. Mrs Meyer was worried about everything. She worried about the weather, about accidents, and about what might happen. In her imagination lived the Shadow of Anxiety, constantly conjuring up catastrophic scenarios. As a result, she tried to anticipate everything, maintain control and protect herself from every possible danger.
Mr Meyer, however, lived quite differently. He calmly accepted each day as it came and, whenever the world seemed too complicated, immersed himself in the ritual of drinking tea. And so their lives went on as usual.
Until one day, a little bird named Piepsi appeared in their garden. From that moment on, the Meyers’ world began to change. Playfulness, surprises, closeness and ever-growing love entered their everyday lives.
Wolf Erlbruch (1948–2022) was a German author and illustrator of children’s books, and one of the most prominent creators of contemporary children’s literature. His work is distinguished by its philosophical depth, subtle humour, existential themes and highly recognisable hand-drawn collage style.
Today, when anxiety about the future, insecurity and constant threats have become part of everyday life for many people, Mrs Meyer’s story feels particularly relevant. The performance explores the possibility of breaking free from persistent fear through connection with others, care and love. As she raises Piepsi, Mrs Meyer begins to change herself, learning to let go of control and discover inner freedom. Love becomes a force that helps us overcome fear and gives us wings.
