Free guided tours at the Liepkalnis Water Reservoir on July 26th

On July 26th (Sunday), we invite everyone to join free tours of the water reservoir. This is a fantastic opportunity to get an up-close look at this unique site, learn about its history, and discover fascinating facts.

Free guided tours await you in one of Vilnius’s most spectacular underground spaces—a water reservoir built 5 meters deep, famous for its extraordinary acoustics where sound can echo up to several times.

The Liepkalnis Water Reservoir is a unique piece of Vilnius’s engineering heritage. Built in 1916 under Liepkalnis Hill, it served as an important part of the city’s water supply system for over a century, managed by the water utility company Vilniaus vandenys. It is one of the largest underground structures of its kind in Lithuania.

The reservoir was in use until 1987 and was closed off and protected as a strategic site for a long time. Since 2023, it has been open to visitors. Tours here are organized by the Energy and Technology Museum, and the space is gradually transforming into a cultural and event venue, making the most of its impressive acoustics, vaulted ceilings, and industrial architecture.
