A Tango Evening in Vilnius Town Hall Square Celebrating Argentina’s Independence Day

Argentina’s Independence Day is celebrated on 9 July—a special date for the country that gave tango to the world. To mark the occasion, Vilnius will be filled with the spirit of tango, elegance, love, and dance on 23 July.

The pioneers of Argentine tango in Lithuania, 4TANGO and Eduardo Gimenez, have been performing, dancing, singing, and promoting tango culture in Lithuania since 1999. Their work has contributed to the development of Lithuania’s tango community and to introducing this unique art form to local residents and visitors to the city.

Tango is a universal language. It is one of the few cultural phenomena that requires no shared spoken language—people meet through music, movement, and emotion. Almost everyone in the world knows the word “tango,” yet only a live encounter with its music and dance can reveal its true essence.

The programme will feature Astor Piazzolla’s most celebrated works, classic Argentine tangos from the early twentieth century, and specially selected music for both dancers and listeners. One part of the programme will invite the audience to dance, while another will allow them simply to listen, close their eyes, and immerse themselves in the world of music.

Eduardo Gimenez is a leading advocate of Argentine tango in Lithuania. Since 1999, he has actively contributed to the promotion of tango culture as a dancer, singer, event organiser, and community leader.

4TANGO is a quartet founded in 1999. Its members are Kristina Žebrauskaitė, accordion; Feliks Zakrevskij, piano; Birutė Bagdonienė, viola; and Donatas Bagurskas, double bass.

The ensemble’s repertoire includes both traditional and modern tango, including tango nuevo.
