About event

How did a piece of contaminated soil in a Petri dish become a work of art?

On October 20 at 17:30, we invite you to the opening of the exhibition “THE MAGIC OF MICROORGANISMS” at the National Visitors Centre.

Event programme:

17:30 – LECTURE: Dr Rimas Meištininkas, head of the Jonava Soil Remediation Site, will present a talk entitled “Areas Contaminated with Petroleum Products in Lithuania and Methods of Remediation”. You will discover how microorganisms help restore contaminated environments.

EXHIBITION OPENING: After scientists at the Nature Research Centre cultivated microorganisms in Petri dishes, photographers Paulius Makauskas and Petras Saulėnas, with the idea conceived by Spartakas Petrovas, spent several days in the studio capturing light and colour effects using a special device constructed by P. Saulėnas. The result is a series of breathtaking works of art that reveal the very essence of life.
