About event

We invite you to visit the exhibition “A World Without Čiurlionis. Valkyrie / Vilks / Motulė”, dedicated to the 130th anniversary of the birth of M. K. Čiurlionis’s sister, Valerija Čiurlionytė-Karužienė.

Today, Čiurlionis’s artworks form part of the golden treasury of Lithuanian culture, and following the worldwide celebrations of the 150th anniversary of the artist and composer’s birth, his work has become increasingly prominent in the international cultural landscape. It is difficult even to imagine what the world might look like without Čiurlionis’s work, yet between 1914 and 1953, his paintings could have been lost at least four times. On all four occasions, his sister Valerija played a crucial role in saving Čiurlionis’s artistic legacy.

The exhibition was created by film director and poet Romas Lileikis:

“In the whirlwinds of history, Čiurlionis’s works could have disappeared. They had to be protected, sometimes even by taking drastic and decisive action. Anything could have led to their destruction: negligence, foreign aggression, fear born under the grip of ideologies. Courage, strength and determination were needed to preserve her brother’s legacy and restore the Čiurlionis family home.”

Admission is free.
