Grandbrothers

This autumn, Lithuanian music lovers are in for a special event – one of the most intriguing music projects of today, the duo “Grandbrothers,” who have conquered major concert halls around the world, is coming to Vilnius.

On October 17, the ensemble will perform at the National Philharmonic. The group became famous for its unique sound, in which the tone of the classical piano merges with the latest technologies and live-created electronic textures. Critics have repeatedly called them “sound architects,” and their concerts are described as a hypnotic combination of music, technology, and performance. The “Grandbrothers,” known for their distinctive creative direction in the contemporary music scene, are often referred to as a kind of “open-heart surgery of the piano.”

Over more than a decade of their career, “Grandbrothers” have become one of the most prominent names in the contemporary classical and electronic music scene. Their work combines minimalist compositions, ambient and electronic soundscapes, and cinematic emotionality. In their music, one can trace the minimalist traditions of John Cage, Steve Reich, and Philip Glass, as well as the creative affinity of Nils Frahm, Hauschka, and Ludovico Einaudi.

The duo has gained international recognition not only for its distinctive sound but also for its exceptional live performances in some of the world’s most prestigious concert halls and major festivals, such as “Sónar,” “Montreux Jazz Festival,” “Mutek,” “Reeperbahn Festival,” “Trans Musicales,” and “Lowlands,” with world tours covering Europe, North America, Asia, and Australia.

The duo has released five albums that have received international acclaim and millions of streams on digital platforms. Their latest album, “Elsewhere,” marks a shift toward analog synthesizers, drum machines, and influences from club culture, giving their music more dynamism and energy. The album was praised for its bold stylistic turn while preserving the core identity of “Grandbrothers” – emotional and captivating piano sound. With this album, the duo recently completed a European tour: over 32 concerts, performing in prestigious venues such as “Élysée Montmartre” in Paris, “Melkweg” in Amsterdam, “Huxleys Neue Welt” in Berlin, “Scala” in London, “Vicar Street” in Dublin, and “Ancienne Belgique” in Brussels, among others. Critics described the tour as one of the most impressive, where minimalist compositions organically merged with intense electronic energy and mesmerizing sound design.

“Grandbrothers” consist of pianist and composer Erol Sarp and sound engineer and software developer Lukas Vogel. Formed in 2011 in Düsseldorf, the duo has gained international recognition by transforming the acoustic piano into a multilayered instrument capable of producing electronic-like soundscapes. They achieve this not through digital samples or virtual synthesizers, but by physically transforming the instrument’s sound using a specially designed electromechanical system. In Vilnius, “Grandbrothers” will present their latest performance, offering listeners multilayered harmonies, hypnotic rhythms, and an impressive lighting and visual stage atmosphere. This is a great opportunity to experience live one of the most fascinating and innovative music duos of today.
