When music is ahead of its time, it can sometimes take decades for the world to hear it. And sometimes, it takes musicians from five countries, determined to rediscover it. On November 10, SONICO will perform at Vilnius Town Hall. The ensemble is one of Europe’s most prominent contemporary tango groups, bringing together musicians from Argentina, Belgium, France, Spain and Chile.
Founded in Brussels in 2015 by double bassist Ariel Eberstein, the ensemble boldly expands the boundaries of tango. Its music brings together complex rhythms, unexpected harmonies, the freedom of jazz, the influence of classical music and the enduring passion of Argentina.
A special place in SONICO’s work is reserved for Eduardo Rovira (1925–1980), a brilliant Argentine composer, bandoneon player and tango visionary who long remained in the shadow of Astor Piazzolla. “There was a time when Rovira was more revolutionary than I was,” Piazzolla himself once said.
SONICO has revived Rovira’s forgotten scores, including some once thought to be lost, revealing just how remarkably contemporary his music sounds. The album ROVIRA 100, recorded in Buenos Aires in 2025 to mark the composer’s centenary, became another important milestone in this mission.
The ensemble’s talent has also been recognised by international critics: Rolling Stone included SONICO among the seven most prominent contemporary tango ensembles, while Billboard named its debut album one of the year’s best tango recordings.
For its Vilnius audience, SONICO will present a programme in which virtuosity meets emotional intensity and the tango tradition opens up in unexpected directions.
