The legendary rock musical celebrating transformation, identity and self-discovery “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” comes to Lithuania for the first time.
In 1998, Hedwig – the rock diva created by John Cameron Mitchell – first appeared on the Off-Broadway stage. A character moving between genders, political regimes and (un)happy love affairs, Hedwig grew up in East Germany hearing that in order to get somewhere, she would always have to leave a part of herself behind.
Just a few years later, Stephen Trask’s musical reached the major stages of the West End and Broadway. To this day, it remains one of the best-known works of its genre, celebrated for its powerful music and inclusive story, as well as for its embrace of the LGBTQ+ community.
At its heart is Hedwig, searching for her place in the sun night after night and embarking on the most open and honest journey towards finding it. Full of humour and explosive rock music, Hedwig and the Angry Inch is a celebration for everyone who has ever felt rejected, misunderstood or unloved – gently inviting each of us to meet our true selves.
Charismatic Hedwig will be portrayed by well-known Lithuanian actor and singer Dominykas Vaitiekūnas, with film and theatre actress Asta Zacharovaitė as his main stage partner, Yitzhak.
Director Augustas Gornatkevičius says: “Hedwig is one of the most iconic queer characters in the world. In a way, she is a reference point – a marker from which we can measure how far we have come, both as a community and as a world. I’m very happy that Hedwig is finally coming to Lithuania.”
