Confronting the Shadow is a co-production of Kyiv’s Left Bank Theatre and Berliner Festspiele, and a striking example of contemporary Ukrainian theatre—an art form experiencing both profound crisis and remarkable creative renewal. The performance confronts what we usually avoid: our inner darkness, not as a ghost of the past, but as a companion of the present. On stage, the personal becomes political and history meets the intimate. Quotes, slogans, distorted voices and hallucinations evoke the crises of our time. Blending action, pain, doubt and irony with resistance, laughter and the search for meaning, the production explores fear and the possibility of transformation.
Tamara Trunova, one of Ukraine’s leading theatre and opera directors and playwrights, has been Chief Director of Kyiv’s Left Bank Theatre since 2019. She has created over 30 productions in Ukraine and abroad and received numerous awards, including the prestigious Shevchenko National Prize.
The performance is in Ukrainian with Lithuanian surtitles.
The performance includes nudity and strong language.
