Sirenos’26: “The House”

Tiles in “The House” have always felt as if they were about to explode — as if behind the walls there were still traces of the people who once lived there: their hands, voices, and footsteps. Yet they never explode. They remain, like a diary preserving imprints of former inhabitants and fragments of our own everyday lives.

“The House” is a performative parable about violence, addiction to images, and the collapse of illusion — in other words, about reality that eventually catches up with us, no matter how hard we try to avoid it.

The work is directed by Dimitris Karantzas, known for his minimalist, tension-driven stage language. The performance constructs an elliptical, almost silent world where action circles around stillness, and meaning emerges through routine rather than dialogue.

On stage, two actors portray characters engaged in ordinary domestic rituals — cooking, cleaning, paying bills — while the outside world is shaken by violence and change. Their apartment could be anywhere: Athens, Tokyo, Madrid, or Vilnius. The familiar space of home becomes both shelter and illusion.

A window functions as the central dramaturgical device: a fragile threshold through which the outside world constantly intrudes, reminding the characters that safety may be only a perception.

Karantzas’ work often explores classical and modern texts through a contemporary psychological lens, and “The House” continues his focus on tension, silence, and the politics of everyday life.
