The exhibition “Gatherings” brings together, for the first time in one space, works created by artist and composer Lina Lapelytė during different periods of her career. The title of the exhibition also refers to the importance of community in the artist’s work. How would our relationship with one another change if we listened carefully to those around us and to our environment, and looked at everyday rituals, rules and coincidences from a poetic perspective? In her work, Lina Lapelytė explores the relationship between voice, music, performance and listening, while experimenting with various spatial situations.
Recurring themes in Lapelytė’s work include interpersonal relationships, ageing, vulnerability and loss; her works intertwine personal and political dimensions. The artist is inspired by composer Pauline Oliveros’s concept of active, or deep, listening, which places responsibility on the listener for what, how and with whom they listen. Both Oliveros’s and Lapelytė’s work and ideas are deeply rooted in the fields of feminism and ecology. Both artists shift attention away from the virtuosity of performance and towards the voice primarily as an instrument of communication.
In the exhibition, the artist responds to the question of “with whom”: most of her works are created through direct collaboration with other artists or incorporate texts by various writers, poets and artists. Each time the works are presented publicly, the question of “when” also becomes important. The re-presentation in 2026 of works created as early as 2011–2015 invites us to ask whether we are living in the future we once imagined.
