Mirka (Dorota Pomykała) is a sixty-year-old midwife. She knows her job very well, but she is even better at hiding her needs and feelings. At home, she also mainly takes care of others – her adult son (Adam Bobik) and her husband (Bogdan Koca), who has forgotten about her. Sometimes she secretly climbs onto the roof of her apartment building to smoke a cigarette. It is the only thing she still does just for herself. But one day everything changes: early in the morning, she hangs out the laundry, prepares lunch, buys food for the fish and… robs a bank with a small kitchen knife.

“Woman on the Roof” is a moving film created by women, directed and written by Anna Jadowska. It is a painfully realistic and exceptionally beautiful film in which Jadowska tells the story of one of millions of invisible Polish mothers in a completely different way – almost in a whisper. She does not choose grand phrases or look for spectacular scenes. Mirka’s truth lies elsewhere – in small gestures, fear-filled looks and the seemingly imperceptible inner transformation of a sixty-year-old woman.

For her outstanding performance in this film, Dorota Pomykała received numerous awards, including the Eagle Award (the Polish Film Academy Award) and the award for Best Actress at the Polish Feature Film Festival in Gdynia.
