The October 4 listening-to-records session is dedicated to the Italian avant-garde of the 1970s and 1980s—a time when composers were no longer content to simply reinterpret old forms. They sought a new relationship with the voice, instruments, electronics, and even the way music is notated and performed.
The program features Sylvano Bussotti, Luciano Berio, and Luigi Nono. Each of them broke established rules in their own way: Bussotti combined music with theater and visuals, Berio enjoyed layering voices and texts, and Nono experimented extensively with electronics, space, and silence. Together, their works demonstrate just how diverse and daring the Italian avant-garde was at that time.
Program:
Sylvano Bussotti – The Rara Requiem (Part 1)
Luciano Berio – Sinfonia
Luigi Nono – Como una ola de fuerza y luz
Luigi Nono – …sofferte onde serene…
