Vytis Nivinskas ‘VIEN-IS(-AS)’: double bass solo concert

A rare event not only in Lithuania, but also in the world – a double bass solo concert by Vytis Nivinskas.

While a double bass solo performance is a rare and special event on the world music scene, a double bass solo concert in Lithuania is even rarer, inviting you to hear one of the great instruments of the stage in a solo amplua.

Jazz double bassist Vytis Nivinskas will appear on stage alone, performing his own compositions and recordings without any accompaniment. Each piece will be unique and exclusive – improvised compositions that will reveal the musician’s unique vision.

“For a while, Vytis was king in the middle of an empty field. There were very few jazz double bass players, who could improvise, and Nivinskas didn’t just play very well; he had developed a recognisable sound, a distinctive vocabulary, and over the years he never stopped improving his skills. Now the ranks of jazz double bassists have grown, but Vytis is still the king”, Laima Slepkovaitė, host of ‘Man patinka džiazas’ programme on LRT, describes Nivinskas, who will give a solo concert at ‘Muzikos magijos klubas’.

The word ‘vienis’ (‘unity’) in the title means the totality of one man’s creative flow, which is impossible to separate, as sound, composition, improvisation, emotions and logic merge into an indivisible unity through one instrument and one man. During the double bass solo performance, not only Vytis Nivinskas’ musical ideas will become one, but also the audience’s reaction in the chamber space of ‘Muzikos magijos klubas’, experiencing the unpredictable beauty of improvisation and the flow of a common energy here and now.

Vytis Nivinskas is a jazz double bassist, one of the most prominent musicians of the Lithuanian jazz scene. He has studied in Austria and the USA, and has played with renowned Lithuanian and foreign artists. He actively participates in jazz festivals, records albums and teaches the young generation of musicians.
