Join us for a low environmental impact trip to Trakai – a small town full of history, culture, and nature. Just 30 minutes by train from Vilnius, this journey is perfect for travelers who want to explore in a responsible way. We walk instead of drive, support local businesses, and avoid waste – all to help protect this beautiful place.
Practical information to help you prepare for the tour:
We don’t go inside the castle during the tour, but you’ll see it from the best spots and have the chance to visit it on your own afterwards. And if you’d like to stay in Trakai a bit longer to explore more, your return train ticket gives you the flexibility to do so.
Trakai was once the capital of Lithuania, before Vilnius took over. It had political importance in the past, but today it’s more known for its calm atmosphere and the famous island castle. Built in the 14th century for the Grand Dukes of Lithuania, the castle was badly damaged in the 17th century. It stayed in ruins for several centuries until eventually it was slowly rebuilt in the 20th century despite the two World Wars and the Soviet occupation. Nowadays it is one of the most visited places in the country!
On the tour, we walk by lakes, parks, and old traditional houses. Along the way, you’ll learn about the local geography, nature, and some of the wildlife that lives in the Trakai region. You’ll also hear stories about the Karaim people – a small community that has come to Trakai from Crimea and lived here for centuries. They brought their own traditions, language, religion, and even their special dishes, the most famous called kibinai. Today, however, their unique culture is at risk, with UNESCO including the Karaim language in the list of endangered languages.
Travel clean, learn more, and experience the real Trakai – the eco-friendly way!
