Agnius Jankevičius’s black satirical musical play “Reforma”, based on his own script, focuses on the processes happening in Europe, including Lithuania. Migration is a phenomenon and a problem, but an even more pressing and growing issue is the spreading global syndrome of feeling unnecessary. Unnecessariness — both socially and existentially — is destructive and offers no solutions for changing the situation. It breeds even greater destruction, absurdity, and sometimes violence.
The depopulation of rural homesteads is upon Lithuania’s provinces, and this is no metaphor. The town of Skakiškis, once known for its bright high school graduates and cheese and butter factories, now merely survives. But the people of Skakiškis have not lost hope. Among them remain creative, innovative, visionary individuals who will not allow their town to become a ghost town. Who are these people? Three teachers from Skakiškis school who devise a plan to turn their town into a new Promised Land.
The play is performed in Lithuanian with Russian subtitles.
Attention! The performance contains smoke and bright light flashes. Strong language is used during the play.
