World Cinema Evenings with Director Audrius Stonys
The M. K. Čiurlionis House invites film lovers and enthusiasts on Thursday, May 22 at 7 PM to continue exploring the treasures of world cinema. After the screening, join discussions, alternative conversations, new discoveries, and experiences created by the evenings’ idea author, Audrius Stonys — laureate of the National Culture and Arts Prize, member of the European Film Academy and the European Documentary Network, who has created over 20 documentary films and around 400 television documentary sketches.

“Powaqqatsi: Life in Transformation” (1988) is the second film of Godfrey Reggio’s trilogy, which began with the cult classic Koyaanisqatsi (1982). These films are without dialogue or traditional plot; their core is a hypnotic combination of images and music aiming to reveal civilization’s changes and their impact on humanity and nature.
Powaqqatsi explores the opposite theme to the first film — if Koyaanisqatsi addressed the impact of technology on the Western world, Powaqqatsi examines the transformation of traditional cultures in the face of globalization and industrialization,” shares director Audrius Stonys.

Audrius Stonys is an active participant in the international film movement and has served on juries at the Leipzig, Neubrandenburg, Siena, São Paulo, and Rio de Janeiro film festivals. His documentaries have won awards at 19 international festivals. He is the only Lithuanian filmmaker honored with the European Film Academy’s “Felix” award. Retrospectives of his films have been held in Israel, Germany, Spain, Belgium, France, the Czech Republic, Russia, and Japan.

“During the cinema evenings, we will open only a small window into that sometimes invisible, often undiscovered or forgotten film treasury. I am not talking about film history distant by decades, but also about the newest films, which struggle to reach us due to paradoxical reasons — their depth, more interesting form, and multifaceted content — all things that provoke allergy, insurmountable horror, and fear among many commercial film exhibitors,” says Audrius Stonys.

The event is free.
Doors open at 6:30 PM.
