Collage opera Mažvydas

The impressive story of Justinas Marcinkevičius’ “Mažvydas” will come to life in the open air of Vilnius University’s Grand Courtyard. The collage opera, which has received huge acclaim from audiences, invites you once again to experience powerful emotions and rediscover the foundations of Lithuanian culture.

This project brought to you by the national ensemble “Lietuva”, combining theater, music, and contemporary scenography, tells the story of Martynas Mažvydas’ struggle for the Lithuanian language and national identity. The performance will feature a synthesis of various musical styles, ranging from folk and symphonic orchestral sounds to electronic and film music.

The national ensemble “Lietuva” and prominent soloists will appear on stage: Giedrius Arbačiauskas will play the role of Mažvydas, Monika Marija will embody Mažvydas’ beloved Marija, Mantas Zemleckas will play his son Kasparas, Rokas Laureckis will play his stepson Kristupas, and Jovita Vaškevičiūtė will play his wife Benigna. Saulius Vasiliauskis will play the role of Mažvydas’ cousin, the Lutheran priest Vilentas, and Martynas Žukauskas will play the role of the monk-inquisitor.

The performance is directed by Kęstutis Stasys Jakštas, with libretto and screenplay by Arnas Ališauskas, music by composer Jonas Jurkūnas, and chief conductor Egidijus Kaveckas. The set design is by Gintaras Makarevičius, costumes by Olga Filatova Kontrimienė, choreography by Aušra Krasauskaitė, projections by Rimas Sakalauskas, and lighting by Audrius Jankauskas. Giedrė Kriaučionytė-Vosylienė is the assistant director.
