Cipollino (Not for Kids!)

Director Šarūnas Datenis, together with artist Antanas Dubra and composer Vytautas Leistrumas, has taken on the bold task of reimagining Gianni Rodari’s children’s classic The Adventures of Cipollino – for adults.

As part of Culture Night, we present an interactive mask performance (18+) inspired by Rodari’s The Adventures of Cipollino.

Gianni Rodari was an Italian journalist, writer, and editor of several children’s publications. He rose to international fame through his literary fairy tales, particularly The Adventures of Cipollino, written in 1951. His stories, though aimed at children, spoke to universal values and, through nonsense aesthetics and humor, boldly critiqued political and social issues. Perhaps that’s why his works continue to be read and appreciated by adults as well. In 1970, Rodari was awarded the Hans Christian Andersen Medal, the highest international recognition for children’s authors.

You’re invited to take part in a story full of adventure, liberation, and the fight for justice – a performance that cannot be contained to a single stage, stretching across multiple theatrical spaces. Together with the little onion Cipollino and other vegetable characters, you’ll search for a freer, unrestrained life, while openly and critically reflecting on our own history and the paths ahead.

In the words of director Šarūnas Datenis:
“Through this performance, we want to encourage people to think for themselves and rebel a little. To understand that we live in a democratic society and don’t have to blindly follow orders. We have the right to ask questions, share our ideas, and challenge authority.”
