On 23 May, at 6 p.m., the cultural exchange festival “Gdańsk in Vilnius 2025” (“Gdanskas Vilniuje 2025”) will be visited by the historical heritage ensemble “Tubicinatores Gedanenses”. Vilnius Church of St. Catherine invites you to a musical time travel: from the medieval towers of the city to the sounds of Renaissance ceremonies.
Musicians Paweł Hulisz (baroque trumpet), Piotr Kowalkowski (baroque trumpet), Emil Miszk (baroque trumpet), Filip Pysz (baroque trumpet) and Paweł Szewczyk (timpani, tambura militare, grand casa, tambourine) will present the authentic tradition of the trumpeters of the city of Gdańsk (Poland), the guard and ceremonial musicians, which has been around since the 14th century.
The band, which upholds the old traditions of Gdansk’s musical culture, plays replicas of authentic brass instruments – historic trumpets. Their repertoire is based on old city council minutes, iconography, historical music manuscripts, and vividly conveys the spiritual heritage of the city of Gdansk.
“Tubicinatores Gedanenses” is the Latin name for “Gdansk trumpeters”.
In medieval and early modern Gdansk, trumpeters were not just musicians, they were an important part of the city’s structure, with protective, communicative and representational functions.
Gdansk trumpeters regularly played from the Town Hall tower, announcing the time and important news. They would sound warning signals in case of fire, approaching enemies or other threats. Trumpeters were an integral part of state and church ceremonies, city festivals and welcoming distinguished guests. They symbolised the power, order and culture of the city.
THE CONCERT IS FREE OF CHARGE
