Can Officers Be Tour Guides?
That’s the question kicking off our third historical discussion with our guide-prison officers. The first two events drew a lot of interest and sparked plenty of questions. This time, we’re meeting under the open sky – in the courtyard of Lukiškės Prison.
On July 1st, five of our guides, all of whom actually worked here during the operational years of Lukiškės Prison, will take the stage – joined by Martyna, the “guide of all guides.” Tempting, right? We think so too – because we still have plenty of questions for them.
Many of us have heard stories about prison life, the criminal underworld, or Lukiškės itself. But who understands it better than those who lived and worked within its walls for years?
Can an officer objectively tell the story of a system they were (or still are) part of? How do visitors react to officer-guides? How can we ensure the stories aren’t biased, stigmatizing, or romanticizing the system? Should former officers be additionally trained as educators or guides? Can a system insider craft an empathetic and sensitive narrative?
We promise to answer at least some of these – and maybe even more intriguing – questions.
Discussion moderator:
