Musical performance of “My Fair Lady” by Frederick Loewe and Alan Jay Lerner

On 2 June 2025 at 6 p.m. in the Library’s Great Hall, a chamber adaptation of the musical “My Fair Lady” by Frederick Loewe and Alan Jay Lerner will be presented, performed by the graduates of the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre: soprano Smilte Murencevaitė, baritone Domas Saulevičius and pianist Prof. Raminta Lampsatytė.

Based on a play by George Bernard Shaw, this musical is considered one of the most successful and longest-running Broadway musicals, which was later made into an Academy Award-nominated film. The musical will be performed in its original language, English, and will last approximately 1 hour.

The idea for this musical came about primarily because of the wonderful music and the interesting storyline. Then, as we started to dig deeper, we realised that this musical is not only a beautiful spectacle for the audience, but it also conveys important themes such as inequality between social classes, gender discrimination and societal indifference. The musical perfectly reflects the ideas of the society of the first decade of the 20th century, the poor reality of working class people and their desire for a better life. The musical shows the desire of the male characters to control women, and the feminist ideas are highlighted with skill and subtlety. It shows real, unromanticised communication and connection between the characters. All this allows the audience to feel the complexity of these issues, which are still relevant today, and makes the musical timeless.

The minimalist staging aims to highlight the main theme of the work, the personal growth and transformation. The libretto has been abridged to reveal the essential experiences of the characters and to convey the story intended by the creators. The musical excerpts performed are combined with spoken scenes and choreography.
