South African pianist, improviser, scholar and Blue Note recording artist Nduduzo Makhathini is one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary jazz. His work brings together African spirituality, improvisation, and contemporary sounds, creating music that is both deeply rooted and forward-looking. This is evident in his diverse range of collaborations, from Wynton Marsalis to Shabaka Hutchings to WDR Big Band and all the way to Black Coffee, to name just a few.

Makhathini’s artistry is shaped by a profound understanding of music as more than performance. For him, music is a space for collective memory, transformation and transcendence. His concerts often unfold with the feeling of ritual, inviting audiences into a shared experience where sound becomes a vehicle for cultural storytelling. This perspective is central to his new Blue Note album, The Myth We Choose, which explores how songs carry meaning across time and help shape the stories future generations inherit.

Makhathini is a commanding pianist with a sound shaped by the folk music of the Zulu people, paired with jazz pianism influences of McCoy Tyner, as well as the South African melodic lineage of Abdullah Ibrahim and Bheki Mseleku.
