Sacred music hours. In the path of light

Performers

AXEL FLIERL (organ, Germany)

Duration:

60 min.

A visiting professor at the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music in Rome, an expert in improvisation, a lecturer at international masterclasses, a musicologist, the artistic director at the Dillinger Basilikakonzerte Festival, and one of the most well-known researchers of Karl Höller’s work – this is Dr Axel Flierl.

While being the main organist and choirmaster at St Peter’s Basilica in Diilinger (Germany), Flierl has during the course of more than two decades transformed this shrine into one of the strongest sacred music centres in the region. Alongside these pursuits, he has given performances in more than thirty countries (from South Africa to Iceland) and has performed all of Maurice Duruflé’s and Karl Höller’s works for organ.

According to Flierl, the programme to be played at St Casimir’s Church was composed to evoke a journey through the change in how sacred music sounds – from the monumental fugues of J. S. Bach to the playful miniatures of G. F. Händel, from M. E. Bossi’s liturgical romanticism to F. Liszt’s expression. Each work reveals a different relationship with faith – and the performer invites you to decide which speaks to your heart the most.
