“A classical music ensemble from Lithuania of the highest quality. Unbelievable sensitivity, unbridled dynamism and brilliant ensemble playing. Four guitars – one soul” – this is how the German press described the Baltic Guitar Quartet.
This, like many other compliments, exuberant calls of admiration and ovations at the most prestigious concert halls have all been rightfully earned. In the hands of these musicians the guitar is not just a modest accompaniment: it resonates in complex polyphony, emotion-filled melodies, glimmering passages and sometimes, it would seem, unbelievable sound effects.
Even though we are used to hearing the organ in a church setting, the quartet’s members remind us that the guitar’s connection to sacred music is deeper than one may think at first glance: “The guitar is not a traditional church instrument, but it has assumed the tradition of the lute, which was closely associated with early religious music. The acoustics of a shrine imbibe the instrument with a breath of fresh air – the sound can travel naturally, as if enveloping the listener. That’s why we believe that this evening will be special not only for us, but for the public as well”, say the performers.
The magic of the sound of four guitars within the acoustics of St Casimir’s Church – an evening worthy of your collection of impressions.
Programme features music by Eduardas Balsys, Faustas Latėnas, Edward Elgar and others
