Roots in resonance | Evening with ShyStella and Ieva Jakusa

On Wednesday, 26 August at 7 pm, you are invited to CAC Reading Room to an evening of performance, presentation and participatory listening with artists Stella Massa (ShyStella) and Ieva Jakusa, presenting the outcomes of their research developed during the π‘Ήπ’†π’”π’Šπ’”π’•π’‚π’π’„π’† π‘Ίπ’π’π’ˆ π‘Ήπ’†π’”π’Šπ’…π’†π’π’„π’š at SODAS 2123.

  • 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒍𝒍𝒂 𝑴𝒂𝒔𝒔𝒂 (π‘Ίπ’‰π’šπ‘Ίπ’•π’†π’π’π’‚) will invite you to be a part of π‘²π’‚π’“π’†π’π’Šπ’‚π’ π‘ͺπ’π’Žπ’Žπ’–π’π’Šπ’•π’š π‘Ίπ’Šπ’π’ˆπ’Šπ’π’ˆ participatory performance exploring collective singing as a living cultural practice and a space for connection, remembrance, and shared presence.

Drawing from Karelian communal singing traditions, archival material from the former rural municipality of Vyborg – where Stella’s family roots originate – and contemporary sound practices, the work moves between performance, sound art, and social gathering.

Rather than treating tradition as something fixed, Stella approaches it as a living practice that continues to evolve through participation, care, and intergenerational exchange. Throughout the evening, the audience is invited not only to listen, but also to sing, remember, and become part of a shared sonic experience.

  • 𝑰𝒆𝒗𝒂 π‘±π’‚π’Œπ’–π’”π’‚ will present π‘¨π’ˆπ’“π’†π’†π’Žπ’†π’π’•, π‘·π’†π’π’…π’Šπ’π’ˆ – a listening session and participatory presentation developed through her artistic research on sutartinΔ—s, Lithuania’s polyphonic singing tradition.

Taking π‘ π‘’π‘‘π‘Žπ‘Ÿπ‘‘π‘–π‘›π‘’Μ‡π‘  as a way of thinking about oral culture, the project asks what happens when living traditions become institutionalised. How can knowledge continue to circulate through listening, repetition, and collective memory rather than documentation alone?

Combining storytelling, field recordings, and reflections from Ieva’s research in Vilnius, the presentation gradually shifts into an exercise in oral transmission. At the end of the evening, each participant will leave carrying a short story, invited to pass it on to three other people – allowing it to continue changing through retelling, just as living traditions always have.

The event is presented as part of π‘Ήπ’†π’”π’Šπ’”π’•π’‚π’π’„π’† π‘Ίπ’π’π’ˆ π‘Ήπ’†π’”π’Šπ’…π’†π’π’„π’š, an international residency programme exploring the political, social, and affective dimensions of song and collective voice.
