Regina Sipavičiūtė | FOR YOU

Thread by thread. Colour by colour. A small square — and an entire world.

Until 16 October, the VDA Artifex Gallery  will present “FOR YOU”, a solo exhibition by Regina Sipavičiūtė. The exhibition is a continuation of the initiative “Classical Inspirations”, which originated at the gallery several years ago.

This time, we are honoured to present Regina Sipavičiūtė, textile artist and educator who has been active in the Lithuanian art scene for more than half a century. For many years, she taught at the Department of Textile Art & Design at the Vilnius Academy of Arts, having inspired generations of textile artists.
In the artist’s work, textile becomes a sensitive space where Lithuanian tradition, colour, light, rhythm and a meticulous handcrafting process come together. Her work is associated with moderation, restraint and rational composition. Harmony, tranquillity, balance and tectonic structure are characteristic of her pieces. Their outward simplicity conceals an unseen dimension of painstaking, jewellery-like craftsmanship.

For this exhibition, the artist presents the viewer with a subtly coloured tapestry, appliqués created using her own technique, and textile miniatures.

An important part of Regina Sipavičiūtė’s artistic identity is traditional cultural heritage. For her, it has become not only a source of inspiration, but also a way of speaking about memory, materiality and the disappearing traces of everyday life.

This exhibition is about textile that can be seen. And about textile that deserves to be looked at closely. It is an exhibition that invites us to examine every thread, to notice its direction, the transformation of colour, and the barely perceptible changes in texture. It is about a tradition that does not remain confined to the past. About craft becoming art. And about small works that contain a wealth of experience.

“I lay one thread next to another; the colours change, and I can move from one colour to another, choosing patterns and colour combinations. The shades of a piece reveal themselves when you pick it up and tilt it—the changing light brings out different tones. Every pattern is completely different and cannot be replicated, because once one thread is laid next to another, it already takes on a different shade.”

Regina Sipavičiūtė has participated in art exhibitions since 1967. Her works have been exhibited in Lithuania and abroad. In collaboration with architects, she has created tapestries and decorative panels for public and private interiors. Among her most significant works are the composition “Maloningoji” in the Credentials Hall (now the Algirdas Mykolas Brazauskas Hall) of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania, and “Tapestry for the State of Lithuania” at the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Lithuania.
