“…to Shine in the Darkness” | Inga Liukaitytė

Pianist Inga Liukaitytė’s concert, inspired by the works of M. K. Čiurlionis, explores the theme of light and darkness — you will hear compositions by F. Chopin, L. van Beethoven, O. Messiaen, and J. S. Bach, conveying a journey from despair to hope and light.

“One must carry light within oneself, from oneself, to shine in the darkness for all those standing on the road, so that seeing it, they may find light within themselves…” wrote M. K. Čiurlionis. His work, full of light and hope, inspires living with goodness and light even in the hardest times. This concert is a search for light both in the world and within our own souls.

The pianist will open the concert with M. K. Čiurlionis’s preludes, revealing contrasts of darkness and light: Pastorale, Allegro, Andante, and Animato cantabile. Next comes Frederic Chopin’s Barcarolle in F-sharp major, reflecting the composer’s inner transformation from calmness to complex emotions, ending in a joyful climax.

The first part will conclude with Beethoven’s Sonata op. 110, where through trials the hero is led into the light, moving from lyrical melodies to a triumphant fugue.

The second part will feature Olivier Messiaen’s works from the cycle “Twenty Views of the Infant Jesus”. This music, filled with faith and light, conveys divine love and illumination, especially in “Christmas” and “The Kiss of the Infant Jesus”.

The concert will close with J. S. Bach’s Chaconne for violin, arranged for piano, whose theme and variations symbolize a journey from darkness into light, reaching hope, peace, and the light of eternity.
