Ousmane Sembene retrospective

From 19 to 25 May, the Skalvija Film Centre presents a retrospective of films dedicated to Ousmane Sembène (1923-2007).

Sembène is often called the father of African auteur cinema. He laid the foundations for African cinema and pioneered in many things: the first professional film made by an African director; the first feature-length film made by an African director to receive international recognition; the first film made in the indigenous Wolof language. His films have become a powerful tool of political and social resistance. After starting his career as a writer, Sembène turned to filmmaking to reach a wider audience on the African continent. According to the director, “cinema is the night school of the nation” – a means to educate, organise and empower audiences.

This retrospective presents seven of Ousmane Sembène’s most important films made between 1963 and 1988. They deal with the French colonial legacy, the aftermath of political independence, the patriarchal system, corruption and the tensions between African traditions and Western values.

Films are shown with Lithuanian and English subtitles.
Screenings will be introduced by film critics.
