Accademia del Piacere is one of the best-known ensembles specialising in early Spanish music, having gained international recognition for its innovative projects, virtuosity and lively, emotional connection with the audience. Led by the charismatic Fahmi Alqhai, the ensemble brings history to life as a vivid, emotional experience. The musicians of the ensemble are able to offer a fresh perspective on the historical repertoire: in this concert, together with the distinguished soprano Nuria Rial, they delve into the music of Spanish Baroque theatre, reviving the works of one of the most renowned composers, organist and director of the royal chapel, Sebastián Durón (1660–1716). The Benedictine Enlightenment scholar Benito Jerónimo Feijóo, who lived shortly afterwards, accused Durón of Italianising Spanish music, but today we would probably call this a modernisation of the old Spanish style.

The concert, which blends passion, virtuosity and the unique spirit of the Baroque, sees the performers breathe new life into the arias from Durón’s stage works, dedicated to the inexhaustible theme of love. Alongside these, the programme also features works by Durón’s contemporaries, showcasing the influence of Italian music and the broader European musical context of the time.
