Midsummer Magic Stories: Free Educational Experiences

On the night of June 23rd to 24th, Lithuania celebrates the mystery of the most magical night and uncovers the ancient roots of Midsummer – Joninės.

Join our free educational sessions at the Vilnius Tourist Information Centre (Pilies g. 7) and discover how this enchanting tradition connects nature, fire, folklore, and living heritage.

Through engaging storytelling and cultural insight, these sessions offer not only an introduction to Joninės, but also a deeper understanding of Lithuania’s intangible traditions and their place in modern identity — including a special mention of how seasonal celebrations and communal rituals continue to live on in events such as the Lietuvos moksleivių dainų šventė, where youth carry forward the country’s song and tradition legacy.

Event Highlights:

  • Joninės Uncovered: Learn about the festival’s origins, symbols, and rituals — from bonfires and wreaths to the search for the mythical fern blossom.
  • Nature-based Lithuania: Discover pre-Christian nature worship and spiritual traditions that still echo in Lithuanian customs today.
  • Vilnius Legends: Hear captivating myths, from Grand Duke Gediminas’ Iron Wolf to the basilisk said to dwell beneath Vilnius streets.
  • Living Traditions: Explore how ancient communal celebrations connect to modern cultural expressions, including the spirit of unity and heritage preserved in the Lithuanian Schoolchildren Song Celebration.
