Composer Snieguolė Dikčiūtė audiovisual music evening | Retrospective

At the Music Magic Club, a jubilee audiovisual music retrospective evening will take place by composer and Laureate of the Government Culture and Arts Prize Snieguolė Dikčiūtė.

In Snieguolė Dikčiūtė’s work, a constructive principle coexists with a language of vivid metaphors. Her compositions are characterized by unconventional instrumental combinations, a synthesis of electronic and acoustic instruments, and the inclusion of acting performances into the overall structure of the work. The composer has collaborated with painters, theatre artists, video artists, and jazz musicians, and in recent years has been working extensively as an artist-researcher in the field of socially engaged art.

The focus of the evening will be the most significant audiovisual works by the composer, created in collaboration with video director Gintaras Šeputis. Part of the works will be enriched with live performance segments. The evening will begin with the piece “Solitude” (1992) for solo flute, performed by Giedrius Gelgotas. This work was created in collaboration with composer and flutist Robert Aitken (Canada, Toronto).

The event is hosted by musicologist Vita Gruodytė, with participation from video director Gintaras Šeputis and film director Sudipto Acharyya (India).

During the evening, the following audiovisual works will be presented:

“Homonautics” (2015)
A work from the author’s project “Sounding Bodies”, written for chamber orchestra, electric violin, soundtracks of arteries and veins, and video projection.
Performed live by Snieguolė Dikčiūtė and sound artist Valdas Narkevičius.

“Paraphony” (1992)
String quartet for three video projections and cello.
The cello part is performed live by Deivydas Dumčius.

“Act” (1987–2004)
An installation for three electric guitars and three projections based on S. Dikčiūtė’s graphic score created in 1987, performed by guitarist Juozas Milašius.

Two films will also be shown:

“Seven Bridges” (1993) – a video film by G. Šeputis based on S. Dikčiūtė’s mystery “Seven Bridges” for chamber orchestra, two organs, and a saxophone group. S. Dikčiūtė created a new version of the soundtrack for the film – for electronic and acoustic keyboard instruments, saxophone group, and female voices.

“Geometry of Bodies” (2020) based on Snieguolė Dikčiūtė’s and Audronė Brazauskaitė’s geoOpera “Vitruvian Man” or “Fi”, performed at Paluknė airfield.
Based on sketches of body parts and biological systems, and texts written using G. Aleksa’s biochemical formulas of body structure, graphic music scores were created using bodies in wheelchairs and human bodies as tools of action painting. According to prepared drawings, the “here and now” painted and projected graphic score (visualizations) on the hangar wall became a map for musicians.
