Join a screening of Ainu Puri, a moving documentary that offers an intimate glimpse into the life and traditions of Japan’s Indigenous Ainu people.
Set in the town of Shiranuka on the island of Hokkaido, the film follows Shigeki Amanai, known as Shige, who has consciously chosen to live according to the traditions of his ancestors despite the pace of contemporary life. He practices ainu puri—the traditional Ainu way of life, where everyday routines are deeply connected to ritual, respect for nature, and ancestral wisdom.
Together with his son Motoki, Shige goes salmon fishing, passing on the traditional marep fishing techniques. More than simply teaching a craft, he shares a philosophy of life rooted in cultural continuity and harmony with the natural world.
With a sensitive and intimate approach, the film follows the family’s daily life, exploring themes of tradition, identity, and preserving cultural heritage in a rapidly changing world.
