“Ąžuoliukas” Choir Presents: Norwegian Boys’ Choir “Sølvguttene”

On September 29, 2026, at 19:00, at St. Catherine’s Church in Vilnius, the “Ąžuoliukas” Choir invites you to a meeting with one of Norway’s most famous boys’ choirs – “Sølvguttene” (“The Silver Boys”).

The boys’ choir of Norway’s national broadcaster, which has been active for more than eight decades, has become an important part of the country’s musical culture. In Vilnius, the 60-member choir will present a programme bringing together European classics and Norwegian music, featuring works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Franz Schubert, Georg Friedrich Händel, Edvard Grieg and the choir’s artistic director Fredrik Otterstad. The music will be performed a cappella, as well as accompanied by organ and piano.

“Sølvguttene” was founded in 1940 by conductor Torstein Grythe. Today, the ensemble is the boys’ choir of Norway’s national broadcaster (NRK), having received numerous national and international awards and distinguished itself through its unique sound and choral tradition.

Throughout its history, “Sølvguttene” has performed at renowned European venues, including Westminster Abbey in London, St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris and Berlin Cathedral. The choir has collaborated with the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet, the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra and the Norwegian Radio Orchestra, the National Theatre, as well as world-renowned performers such as Kiri Te Kanawa, Barbara Hendricks, Andrea Bocelli, Diana Ross, the band “a-ha” and Norwegian singer Sissel Kyrkjebø.

In Norway, the voices of “Sølvguttene” are particularly inseparable from the Christmas tradition – the choir’s Christmas concerts have been an important part of the country’s festive season for many years. The ensemble also regularly performs for the Norwegian Royal Family.

The choir is led by Fredrik Otterstad and Frikk Heide-Steen. Artistic director F. Otterstad studied at the University of Oslo and the Norwegian Academy of Music, while choir director F. Heide-Steen studied at the Norwegian Academy of Music and the Bårdar Academy of Musical Theatre.

In Vilnius, the choir will perform together with Norwegian organist Otto Christian Odland – organist at St. Olav’s Catholic Cathedral in Oslo and lecturer at the Norwegian Academy of Music. An internationally performing musician who has given concerts in Norway, other European countries and the USA, he has been collaborating with “Sølvguttene” for fourteen years.

This autumn, “Sølvguttene” will embark on a concert tour of Latvia and Lithuania. In Riga, the Norwegian singers will meet with the Riga Boys’ Choir, while in Vilnius they will perform together with the boys’ and youth choir “Ąžuoliukas”.
