Lecture on “Foundations of Heritage Conservation: the Politics of Heritage Preservation in Lithuania and Great Britain”

The Association for the Development of Architectural Quality (AKVA) initiates the lecture series “Heritage in Times of Change: the Protection and Enhancement of Urban Heritage in a Changing World”, which invites Vilnius residents and all those interested to look at cultural heritage from different angles: legal regulation, maintenance procedures and processes, its materiality, people’s involvement, economic benefits and the possibilities of combining the new and old. In addition to AKVA, the partners Vilnius Old Town Renovation Agency and sa.lt are contributing to the implementation of the cycle, and the funding is provided by Vilnius City Municipality.

The series will start with a lecture by Sigita Bugenienė, a specialist in the protection of cultural heritage, on “Foundations of Heritage Conservation: The Politics of Heritage Preservation in Lithuania and Great Britain”. The lecturer will give an overview of the UK’s real cultural heritage protection system, its legal and institutional structure, and the processes involved in the assessment, protection and adaptation of heritage objects. The topics presented will be compared with the Lithuanian heritage protection system to highlight similarities and differences. The lecturer will give concrete examples of good practice in Great Britain, both in terms of conservation and management of heritage assets and community involvement in heritage conservation. The discussion will look at what aspects of good practice could be adapted to the Lithuanian context.
